Get to
know us

Welcome to Hunky Dory Market + Deli. We’re so excited to be the new kids on the block in downtown Wheeler! Opening in late spring 2026, we want to welcome you and your family, your dogs, your out-of-town friends, and whomever else the tide washes in, as we fill your bellies, stock your fridge and become fast friends.

I’m Alaya, chef-nutritionist and proprietor of Hunky Dory. If we haven’t met yet, I can’t wait to get to know you over sandwiches and good music soon. As someone who split her formative years in the food + wine industry and writing as a music journalist, our name is most definitely inspired by one of our family heroes, David Bowie. You’ll always find good tunes spinning at The Hunk!

And hello, neighbors, we will have groceries! You will find a combination of hyper-local produce, meats, seafood, dairy, eggs, coffee, tea, flowers and more. I’m passionate about nutrition access for all community members, as well as a vibrant local economy. Achieving both of those things starts by supporting producers who live and work in our region first, and then being innovative about how to make access more equitable.

In addition, we’ll stock some fun, harder-to-find quality imports, a few cookbooks and kitchen gadgets, a bulk pet food station so you can grab a scoop when you’re low, as well as a super curated wine, cider and beer selection. Yes, we’ll stock regular glutinous beer (Chad’s in charge of that) as well as plenty of hard-to-find gluten-free options. And once we’re fully operational, you’ll be able to enjoy these by the glass on our covered deck, overlooking the gorgeous Nehalem Bay, while drifting into a bliss state or plotting your next coastal adventure.

Our all-season and dog-friendly patio seating will be up and running right around summer solstice. Saluti!

A dedicated gluten-free production kitchen, I promise you won’t be able to tell. Our artisan-style, Italian inspired menu will aim to tantalize your tastebuds and leave your gut and mind feeling groovy! As a nutritionist and chef, who is also Celiac, I have had 20 years to perfect doughs, and let me tell you, you don’t know what’s coming! I’m talking pizza dough, breads, fresh pastas, and baked treats. I often get unsolicited “feedback” that it’s impossible to make artisan, properly behaving doughs that are gluten free. You know what I have to say to that? Potaters gonna potate. Just wait.
